RACE REPORT: 2016 WORCS #1 | Taft
ROCKY MOUNTAIN ATV/MC, PRECISION CONCEPTS RACING’S ROBBY BELL TAKES WORCS SERIES OPENER.
Taft, CA (January 10th, 2016) –
The 2016 WORCS series kicked off in Taft, CA on a fast and very choppy racecourse. When the gate fell for the 2-hour pro race, Rocky Mountain ATV/MC, Precision Concepts’ Robby Bell pulled a commanding hole shot, leading the field out onto the off-road sections of the course. Said Bell of his start, “That was one of the best starts of my life! I had a similar start last year, but I blew past the first turn, so this time I made sure I remembered to turn right.” Robby did his best to open up an early gap over the field, pulling out over ten seconds on Justin Jones, who quickly made his way into second. “I saw JJ move into second and I knew he was going to be pushing a fast pace,” said Bell, “so I did my best to pick up my pace to match.”
Fellow Rocky Mountain, Precision Concepts rider Justin Seeds didn’t get off to quite the same start as his teammate, coming out of the first few corners around twelfth place, but quickly went to work pushing his way through the field. Seeds later talked about his start, “I thought I had my body position right, but I just spun [off the concrete start pad] and got a horrible start. I knew I needed to push and just put my head down, dealt with the roost and made some passes the first couple laps.”
Justin charged all the way up to fourth place and was catching Blayne Thompson for third when a slight mistake on the final lap cost him his shot at the podium. “There was a little silt [hole] and I got bucked going into it and then my front wheel hit [the hole] and threw me over the bars. Luckily I was able to get up…and then it was a little bit of a panic because I knew Colton was right behind me.” Justin was able to remount ahead of Colton and held his fourth place position to the finish. “It was only a fourth, but [my ride] gave me a lot of confidence moving forward.”
Up front, Robby came in to refuel a lap earlier that Jones, losing the lead as he exited his pit, but quickly pushed to find a way back by. “I didn’t want to be behind in the few silty sections out there, so I worked really hard to pass JJ back and was able to sweep around the outside of him through a left-hander.” From there Robby never relinquished the lead, even with an additional pit on the final lap for a little more gas, and took the first checkered flag of the new year. “It feels great to start the year off this way. I’m just so proud of the team for the effort everyone is putting in and it feels great to repay that effort with a win.”
Up next for Bell and Seeds is the opening round of the BIG 6 Grand Prix series in Adelanto, CA. Robby will be looking to maintain his momentum, but Justin has his sights set on the top step of the podium, “I led a good amount of [the Adelanto GP] last year and feel I have the potential to win it. Staying so close to the leaders at Taft [considering the bad start and crash] definitely gave me the drive to get out front.”
