Race Report: 2015 WORCS Round 6 | Cedar City

WORCS championship series
Round 6 | May 24, 2015 | Cedar City, UT

Robby Bell     |  1st place
Justin Seeds  |  5th place

Round six of the 2015 WORCS series headed back to Utah, where Iron Mine Raceway in Cedar City would play host. Periodic rain throughout the weekend left the majority of the racecourse with absolutely perfect traction, save for a few slick, muddy spots on the motocross tracks, which linked together a fast off-road course that serpentined its way around the surrounding landscape.
As the gate dropped for the pro race Robby got off to a decent jump, moving his way into second behind Gary Sutherlin, while Justin spun terribly off the gate and was dead last into the first corner. The racers seemed to settle in to a safe pace the first couple laps as they felt out the muddier sections of the course, until halfway through the third lap when Robby began to mount a charge for the lead. In a fast, split-line section of course Robby tried overtaking Gary, but as their lines merged Robby was left wide of the ideal line, clipped a rock and fell, relegating him to third behind Eric Yorba.
Near the halfway mark, Justin was beginning to make some ground towards the front of the pack as he passed Ivan Ramirez to move into the top five, but he was left with quite a gap to close to catch up to a podium position. Meanwhile, Robby had passed Yorba for second and as the laps wound down he was able to catch right up to the back of Gary. With just under two laps to go, Robby made the pass and was able to make it stick to the finish, taking the win. Justin put on a late charge, closing the distance on Yorba and Travis Coy down to just a handful of seconds, but unfortunately he ran out of time and was forced to settle for fifth place on the day.

The win gives Robby a healthy points lead with just three rounds to go, and a mathematical shot at wrapping up the title at the next round in Washington in early August. “I’m really happy to get back to winning ways in the WORCS series, since I felt I let one slip away at the last round. I rode like a bit of an idiot early on, throwing the bike away, but luckily I didn’t damage my bike too badly and was able to catch back up and take the lead. I’m looking forward to the challenge of Washington, anyone familiar with my career knows I haven’t had the best time in the trees, but I feel I’m in the best form of my life and want to prove to myself that I can ride well in the forests up north.”

The fifth place finish puts Justin in fifth in the series standings, but only a couple points out of second in the championship. “I felt like my race was solid, but I just couldn’t find a comfortable line around the whole course until it started to dry out a bit, and by the time that happened everyone was too far ahead of me. I know I should be running up with Gary and my teammate Robby, but unfortunately on race day that hasn’t happened lately. I’ll keep believing in myself and pushing to show everyone I can beat them. I want to thank Precision Concepts, John Burr Cycles, Monster Energy, Moose racing, Focus apparel, EKS Brand goggles, Shoei, Townsend Designs, my family, friends and all of the team sponsors for supporting me.”
