Race Report: 2015 WORCS Round 5 | Sand Hollow

WORCS championship series
Round 5 | April 19th, 2015 | Sand Hollow, UT

Robby Bell     |  2nd place
Justin Seeds  |  4th place

The fifth round of the WORCS grand prix series headed to the deep sand dunes of Sand Hollow, Utah. Lap times were the longest the series has seen since 2013 with the racers taking over eighteen minutes to complete a loop. The race began with a dead engine start and while Justin got off to an average start, Robby was left in the first corner picking his bike up after running into the back of Ryan Reina. Robby quickly made a charge through the field, passing up to third by the end of the first lap; Seeds had also made a few moves to put himself just inside the top five. With such long lap times, and deep sand, the team made the decision to play it safe and pit every two laps, making for a total of two pits in the race while the main competitors’ KTMs use slightly larger tanks and were confident in pitting at the close of lap three, making for just one stop in the pits.

Robby had passed into the lead by the end of the second lap, but relinquished the top two spot to Gary Sutherlin and Eric Yorba after coming into the pits for gas, and would rejoin the race in third. Meanwhile, Justin had made his way up to fourth place, passing Ivan Ramirez, and was putting in a steady charge to catch Yorba for the final podium position.

Past the halfway point of the race, Robby had made his way back into the lead and, after his second pit stop, maintained a slight advantage over Gary Sutherlin. Justin was making a charge as well, as he had not only caught up to the back of Eric, he was able to overtake Yorba and move into third position. Out front, Robby had a minor crash, losing the lead to Gary, and as the white flag flew, the two were mere seconds apart. The two traded the lead numerous times, with Gary leading the two through a high-speed section with embedded, buried rocks. As Robby moved out of the main line to try for a pass, he clipped a rock, sending him out of control and tumbling to the dirt. His shot at the lead was gone, but Robby was able to maintain second position at the checkers. Justin had his hands full on the last lap as well, as Eric had mounted a charge and caught Justin by surprise, making the pass for third. The two raced flat out to the checkered flag, crossing nearly side-by-side, with Justin just missing the final podium spot by half of a second and having to settle for fourth.
The second place finish still helped Robby pad his championship points lead over Justin Jones, to thirty points, and the fourth place helped Justin climb up to third overall in the series standings.
